Pathways to Health

2009

Focusing on the low-income, uninsured immigrant population in Bergen County, Bergen County Community Action Partnership is using the Expecting the Best curriculum to enhance its current English as a Second Language program with a 15 hour health literacy component. Through a partnership with Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative (BVMI), program participants receive direct health counseling from a nurse practitioner. Healthcare practitioners at BVMI participate in in-service training focusing on cultural differences and the impact of language on healthcare and compliance with medical protocols.
